1 BRAINSTORMING & Learning Goals

2 Format Options

3 Parameters for Play

4 Structure / play-by-play

Learning Goals

Two-sided process--not assimilation

Everyone learns something new

Culture changes over time

No cultural group is homogenous

dependence on ability to live in the neighborhood and get a job

bureaucracy of integration--accessibility

finding the right assistance

schools and access to (language) education

--Einschulung, no-man's land ages 16-18

internal struggle with family vs. host culture (1st gen)

coming into a new culture/displacement

inherited/family knowledge

Visible/invisible foreignness, perceived vs. actual, misinterpreted national/cultural origins

Format 1

Game of Life?

assign different groups to different types of schools (how can we simulate online? hold still or move around... Betreuer acting as biased teachers?)

different sets of instructions, some more clear than others

--villagers seek out info online?

some have multiple responsibilities

Stations in breakout rooms

--everyone starts in main room

--private chats with host?

--host can move groups to rooms

--can a Gruppenleiter move their own group?

Format 2

Learning Goal: Create a critical lens for narratives of “culture clashes”

Distinction from XYZ Land -- this focuses on power between social groups, rather than language

Multiple simulations with 2 cultures

Even vs. uneven cultural contact

Assimilation vs. integration vs. war

1st run: no one changes their culture

2nd run: one group must change for other group

3rd run: both groups can change

Parameters for play:

Provide each group with their values and goals

Each group creates their proposal for how the space should be used

    • Goal: Create a shared symbol of identity (map, flag, Wappe, laws - reflect a view of the world and relative importance of the groups’ distinct customs & traditions). Maybe design a new Waldsee? Maybe have counselors on site act out the results of each round as avatars? Maybe funding or space distribution for sports versus arts at Waldsee?

    • Have a moderator who the groups have to run ideas past?

    • Have a panel that assesses each round?

    • Have very partisan counselors in each group? (Advocating for a hockey rink & swimming pool and paddle boards for every villager versus an auditorium and huge art studios with kiln and expensive lighting rig and recording studio and nice instruments for a full orchestra)

Round 1

    • Method for interaction: convince the other group to adopt your map

    • Or as a presentation where each group gets to present and the donor rejects the separate proposals

    • Outcome: The two groups can’t share the same camp so cannot build because they don’t have access to the full budget

Round 2:

    • Method for interaction: one group gets to make the rules for the discussion, the other group is instructed to collaborate/be willing to compromise/given no instructions?

    • Or only one group is allowed to present/very unequal rules for presentations

    • Outcome: The groups cannot reach a compromise so cannot build

Round 3:

    • Method for interaction: Collaboration

    • Outcome: Successful funding/donation of land/map of site

STUCTURE ? PLAY-BY-PLAY ? IN BIG ZOOM

We are building Waldsee 2.0--blank slate!

Kids are asked to represent specific groups within Waldsee

Some LKT on Board? 4 (2 advanced 2 middle?)

IN TWO SEPARATE BREAKOUT ROOMS

Instructions for Betreuer: choose 1-2 people to draw per group (in whiteboard)

Encourage as many students to present before board as possible

SPORT GRUPPE:

7 students

2 students present each round, encourage different students do present each round

Betreuer take a screenshot of the whiteboard map each round and screenshares during the board presentation

Round 1: Plan ideal, present ideal

Round 2: start with short debrief of presentation, plan presentation to be more convincing with more time and more arguments, present to the board

Round 3: start with short debrief of presentation, plan presentation with new limitations, present to the board

KUNST GRUPPE:

7 students

2 students present each round, encourage different students do present each round

Betreuer take a screenshot of the whiteboard map each round and screenshares during the board presentation

Round 1: Plan ideal, present ideal

Round 2: start with short debrief of presentation, new proposal with restrictions, ready to compromise, present to the board

Round 3: start with short debrief of presentation, plan proposal with new limitations, present to the board

Debrief:

What worked well? What didn't work? Why?

What other contexts is this analogous to?

TO DO:

Make instruction sheets for board - Evi

Make instruction sheet for sport group and art group for each round - Vera

Make a Betreuer instructions doc including group specific recs - Fenja

Debriefing Questions - Uschi

Debriefing / Nachbesprechung : what does successful integration look like?

Who provides the knowledge? Descriptors reveal more about themselves than those being described

Critical lens on Germany vs. on refugees

Orientalism?

Provide them with firsthand experiences

Bring discussion back to school systems - education critical to cultural integration

What if it wasn’t a map, what if it were a budget? Or a constitution?

(I feel like these should be formulated as questions simple enough to process verbally - Fenja)

Notes :

Consider size -- there might be only 10 ish LKTS

Consider the ability to implement online - is one way more work than the other?

    • Designate 1-2 draw-ers to use whiteboard function to visually represent ideas-

    • Invite directors, teachers, students from various countries to participate : GUESTS!

alle (sind) herzlich willkommen.
