30 Years War

This large-scale simulation is designed to provide villagers with the opportunity to learn about one of the most significant events in European history through a detailed role play.

Villagers taking part in this simulation will be able to answer the following questions

    • What were the causes of the 30 Years War? What role did religion play? How about geopolitics?

    • Why did the 30 Years War last 30 years? What underlying currents were at play across Europe? How did these factors change throughout the war?

    • What is the significance of the Treaty of Westphalia, which ended the war? How did the resolution of the war alter politics across Europe

This simulation is designed for 25-40 participants. You will need the following:

    • one counselor with knowledge of the history of the Thiry Years' War to be the Spielleiter

    • one counselor who has been briefed on game rules and history per team

    • a large map of Europe on which all relevant players are depicted. This can be hand drawn on a large piece of paper so that the game leader can mark any relevant changes in territories throughout the game.
